A Former Facebook Exec Asks Herself the Same Question at the End of Each Day to Keep Her Career on Track
A Former Facebook Exec Asks Herself the Same Question at the End of Each Day to Keep Her Career on Track While a âcareer pathâ sounds clear, it can be anything but. Debra Bednar-Clark, CEO and founder of career and leadership coaching firm DB+co, told Business Insider that in reality, very few people see their path from the start. âLater in my career, I realized that itâs rarely a straight line to wherever youâre going,â she said. âIn my experience, there are a handful of people who know from an early age what theyâre meant to do in life, and for everyone else, itâs really a continual process that requires being aware of your thoughts, feelings, and emotions.â Before starting her own company, Bednar-Clark was the global head of strategy and growth at Facebook, and spent time as Microsoftâs director of US market strategy and engagement. âFor me, for example, every career decision Iâve ever made has been about what felt right to me in that moment,â she said. âWhat I was drawn to, what I wanted to learn more about, what I wanted to believe in, while also developing skills, which meant that my career hasnât been linear. I like to say itâs been beautifully messy.â Now that sheâs created the perfect job for herself, she makes a point of aligning her intentions with her mission daily, to make sure sheâs serving, learning, and growing the best she can. She does this with a question: âHave I brought my whole self forward to be of service, to make someone elseâs life better?â âI think service is incredibly unique based on your role in the company and your own mission,â she continued, âbut for me, I ask myself, for example, âDid I help a client see a new perspective or shift their mindset so theyâre one step closer to reaching their goals? Did I help a client slay her compensation goals, or title dreams, or professional milestones that she wanted to conquer? Did I help someone take one step closer to bringing their whole, authentic self to work?'â She asks the same question for her personal life, too, from connecting with valued friends to nurturing her marriage. For clients looking for direction on their own career paths, she recommends knowing where your true interests lie. She tells clients to stay open to meeting new people, having new experiences, and fielding new perspectives to find those interests. âIf youâre doing the outreach, and connecting with different people in different industries and exposing yourself to different things,â she said, âit just really helps you understand whatâs resonating for you, so you can make those decisions that are much more strategic and be successful and fulfilled in your career.â This story originally appeared on Business Insider.

Changing Careers These 3 Fields Are Your Best Bet
Changing Careers These 3 Fields Are Your Best Bet Making a career change tends to go in one of two directions. You eitzu sich planned ahead for the next field you want to pivot into, usually by going back to school or taking classes to refine skill sets. Or, you experienced the ever-popular situation where circumstances beyond your control left you with no choice but to make a career change.According to the United States Department of Labor, 27% of individuals between the ages of 18 to 48 have worked 15 jobs or more. Once considered taboo to job hop, now its gradually becoming more encouraged within the workplace. Professionals seek positions and companies that best fit their skills and align with their values. Others also use this time to consider the jobs that got away, and pivot into a whole new role altogether.Ready (or not) for your next career move? Its not as nerve-wracking as it looks Make the leap forward with confidence into one of ansicht three thriving industries.1. Consu ltingKanesha Baynard is a transition coach at Bold Living Today. She has noticed that many individuals tend to do well as consultants because the field welcomes a large variety of skills, experiences, and expertise. Many are able to step directly into consulting roles if they have a stellar portfolio and great connections. What happens if you dont have that portfolio or connections? Can you still make a career change into consulting? Personal branding strategist Marietta Gentles Crawford says its definitely worth pursuing if you have communication skills to back you up.The actual specifics of the consulting job in itself will vary, but the qualifications come down to soft skills, Gentles Crawford explains. Hiring managers are more concerned with seeing if you will be a good fit for the role based on your overall experience and personality. She notes that while there is a learning curve for training in any position, nobody can be trained to have a good personality. If you can master com municating your transferable skills, youll easily learn how to align your skills with the job description. This sets you apart from candidates that may match a role better on paper, but cannot sell their skills. And consultants value attributes like communication skills since they are skill-based professions.2. wohlbefindenHow much is the wellness industry currently valued at? According to the Global Wellness Institute, that number is $4.2 trillion dollars. Wellness is one of the biggest industries in North America. If you pardon the pun, its an industry where a career change is genuinely good for you.Theres something for everyone in wellness, says Chris Chancey, CEO of Amplio Recruiting. You can go into yoga, aerobics, nutrition, health startups, or personal training.Chancey notes that some wellness niches may require certification, depending on your area of interest. Its worth getting certified or receiving an advanced degree as necessary in your field. If youre passionate about h ealth, wellness, and are motivated to inspire others on a one-on-one basis or in groups, a career in the well industry might be the right direction for you.3. EntrepreneurshipFine, dont quit your job. Just cheat on it a little. These are the opening sentences on salary replacement strategist Ina Coveneys website. They sum up what she does well, too. Coveney started her own side hustle while she was on maternity leave and wound up making a significant mark in the online business coaching space. She works with full-time corporate workers to help them use their existing professional skills to create side businesses. These businesses allow them to replace their salary within one year, ultimately breaking out of life as an employee and entering entrepreneurship. The corporate full-timers Coveney works with often experience a pattern in their career changes. They will pivot into a role not far from what they already do, or they choose to pursue their passion. She recommends choosing the lat ter.People who chase their dreams report higher levels of satisfaction with their choice, Coveney says, Those that choose the familiar tend to believe life will be easier and that they will make more money. What they dont realize is that they often anliegen into the same pitfalls they were running away from in their last job the same hours and demands.Entrepreneurs, and solopreneurs, may be tasked with forming a business and addressing all of the responsibilities that come with operating one. After the initial first few years in business, however, its difficult to find an entrepreneur that regrets the decision made to follow their dreams and become the master of their own destiny. When someone pursues a life they dream of, they have relentless discipline and resourcefulness to go for it, Coveney says.

Life is too short
Life is too shortLife is too shortOn Wednesday, US News officially released its 2010 law school rankings (though many readers got a sneak peak earlier in the week). Despite the attempt of perennial critic Brian Leiter to launch a bloggers boycott (The fact that this garbage appears in a major news magazine doesnt change the fact that it is garbage.), the blogosphere resounds with ranking rehash.Above the Law is posting a series of open threads about closely-ranked schools U.S. District Court Judge LouisPollak has published an article on Why Trying to Rank Law Schools Numerically Is a Non-productive Undertaking and the absurdity of US News is discussed from the perspective of a political scientist who has studied its methodology. In addition to the view that any law school rankings are by their nature ridiculous, specific criticisms of the US News approach include undue emphasis on academic peer assessments, the extent to which the rankings depend on manipulable data, and the insuffic ient attention given to criteria that really matteri.e.,the perception of your fhigkeit future colleagues and employers. For critics in the latter camp, there is an alternative ranking that exclusively measures employability, as determined by law firm professionals directly involved in the assessment of law school graduates. In any case, before you get too caught up in the griping and sniping, try to keep some perspective. While Im hardly one to dismiss the value of rankings, consider the words of one commenter on the WSJs Law Blog The obsession with prestige is why people hate lawyers. Dont go somewhere youll be unhappy just for the sake of prestige, because youll soon find that you hate lawyers too. Life is too short.- posted by vera
